The Benefits of Exercise

Updated: May 19, 2021

If you’re like me, you need to know the why. Why we do what we do. If you understand your why, you are more inclined to do something because it makes sense to you. Just being told to do something for most of us is not enough. During this unprecedented time, it is very challenging to exercise. Later in this article I will talk about the how, where and when to exercise. For now, let’s talk about why you should.

Exercise increases cerebral blood volume and stimulates brain cell growth slowing down the aging process. This is important to all of us but even more important to those with conditions such Parkinson's, Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Increased blood flow to the brain enhances our ability to concentrate and think clearly.

Movement and exercise can reduce anxiety, depression and helps us decompress and relax. It improves our mood by raising serotonin and dopamine levels making us feel better naturally. It reduces our body’s production of the stress hormone known as cortisol which programs our bodies to store calories in response to potential danger. This is known as the fight or flight response.

If that is not enough, exercise helps us maintain a healthy weight and can definitely help us lose weight. It can help prevent or improve diseases such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease.

When done in a group, there is evidence that the social aspect of smiling, laughing and sharing creates a sense of belonging and feelings of happiness. These feelings then have a ripple effect.

Hopefully, you have found more than one “why” in this article that motivates you to move. It is up to you to find ways to exercise that work for you, whether in a group or on your own. If social distancing is holding you back, find things to do outside. Walking is the easiest, cheapest exercise there is. Do it every day if possible, at more than a leisurely pace. Find outdoor events when weather permits. More and more virtual exercise and workout programs are available online and in apps for every kind of device – TV, laptop, desktop, iPad, tablet and phone. Find community centers in your area that provide fitness programs that are safely socially distanced.

Find what you enjoy most. Not sure if you’ll like it? Try it, you may surprise yourself! I have found that if you enjoy doing it, you will find ways to make time for it. I recommend Zumba because it is the exercise I love most! With Yoga coming in next. Both are for all ages and fitness levels.
